Psychiatric Illness

Although there is not an abundance of data for exactly what should be in these types of protocols, it remains important for psych boarding

Transfer Criteria

  • Active emotional illness
  • Patient has one or more goals of observation - i.e. electrolyte abnormality for clearance, MAT for placement, awaiting sobriety for reassessment

Exclusion Criteria

  • Patient has organic reason for alteration in mental status (hypoglycemia, meningitis, sepsis)
  • Patient not awake or obtunded

Potential Interventions

  • Initiation of alcohol withdrawal protocol
  • Reevaluations by ED providers or psychiatry
  • Trial or restart of medical therapy for psychiatric condition
  • Identification of community resources for discharge

Discharge Criteria


    • Safe discharge plan identified
    • Patient evaluated by psychiatry or crisis team
    • Patient free from legal hold


    • Patient intoxicated after 24 hours
    • Patient is unstable or withdrawal
    • Reevaluations show consistency in need for placement to inpatient psychiatric facility
